In mid-December 2020 a team of high school students contacted Desmos in search of an NGO partner that could facilitate their effort to pay tribute to and fundraise for the healthcare providers fighting against COVID-19 in Greece.
George Theophilopoulos and Amalia Diamantopoulou were two of the 17 teenagers, from various Athenian-based schools, who joined forces under the name Covid Band-Aid and created their unique version of the internationally popular song “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, originally performed in 1984 by “Band Aid”. Each member recorded the song on their mobile phone and after processing the footage and combining the vocals, they produced an amazing video that was uploaded on Youtube on Christmas Day 2020. As project leader, George assumed organizational duties and combined his knowledge in the use of technology with his incredible musical talent to bring the group together and produce the heartwarming video! Amalia, undertook a more active role in the project by assuming administrative and communications duties which were carried out in a professional and effective manner.
The group not only paid tribute to the medical professionals on the front lines fighting against COVID-19 across Greece, they also helped convey a message of hope and gratitude through numerous interviews on national TV and the written press. Their effort managed to raise €380, which has been donated towards the purchase of 220 Tyvek Head Protection Hoods for the Intensive Care Unit of Evangelismos, one of the largest hospitals in Greece.
In their own words: “Through our music, we would like to share and spread our immense gratitude to all healthcare providers of Greece, especially to all at the ICU of “Evangelismos” Athens’ General Hospital, who have been working tirelessly for our wellbeing and health. This video is especially for you, to ‘let you know it’s christmastime’ where hope and love surpasses all. To everyone: although Christmas may be a little different this year, we can still help bring smiles of joy. We wish you a very Merry Christmas! Stay safe, stay positive. “
